Terms Used In NYSC And Acronyms Explained

It has been observed that many prospective corps members and corp members surprisingly still find it hard to understand some terms and acronyms used in regards to the NYSC program.. Comedy videos have even erupted in regards to this observation which isn’t funny at all.. I’ve written this post so as to guide every one reading it, to understand every acronym and term used in NYSC program..

1. Whats NYSC?

NYSC stands for National Youth Service Corps. It all dates back to the regime of General Yakubu Gowon in 1973, in a bid to build a united Nigeria, he established a scheme known as the NYSC (National Youth Service Corps).This scheme demands that young Nigerian graduates be posted to states other than their state of origin to serve their fatherland in other to foster unity.

2. What’s PCM ?

PCM stands for prospective corp member.. Once one has been approved by his or her school management to carry out their 1 year national youth service program, they are then referred to as prospective corps members.. Fresh/new corps members and prospective corps members are popularly called Otondo corpers by old corpers and White Fowl by military men. 

3. What’s CDS?

The acronym CDS stands for, Community  Development Service..It is often referred to as secondary assignment and is compulsory for every corps member.



4. What’s EXEMPTION In NYSC ?

This is a process in which an individual opt’s out from servicing or automatically isn’t legible to serve due to age. In a scenario such as this, an exemption letter is given..This is part of the NYSC scheme with relates to the the National Youth Service Corps Decree 1993 section 2 subsection (1) which stipulates that;

With effect from 1st August, 1985, a person shall NOT be called upon to serve in the service corps if, at the date of graduation or obtaining his diploma or other professional qualification”

Criteria to warrant an exemption letter:

  1. If He/She is over the age of thirty (30) years.. Click here for details..
  2. If He/She has served in the Armed Forces of the Federation or the Nigeria Police Force for a period of more than nine months; or
  3. If He/She is a member of staff of any of the following:
  • The Nigerian Security Organization or
  • The State Security Service.
  • The National Intelligence Agency.
  • The Defense Intelligence Service.
  • He/She has been conferred with any National Honor.

5. What’s CALL UP LETTER ?

The Call-up letter is the document that certifies and signifies that a PCM has been deployed to a state for the National youth Service. It entails the address of your orientation camp and instructions about your orientation course plus full details of the state a PCM has been deployed to….

6. Whats DG in NYSC?

DG stands for “Directive General of NYSC”. The current DG of NYSC is the person of Brigadier General. Shuaibu Ibrahim . Brig Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim assumed duty as the 18th Chief Executive of the National Youth Service Corps on Friday 10th May, 2019. Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim is happily married and his blessed with children. His hobbies include watching Football and current affairs.

Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim hails from Nasarawa Local Government area of Nasarawa State of Nigeria. After his primary and secondary education, he proceeded to the University of Jos where he obtained his Bachelor and Master’s degrees before he later bagged a PGDE from Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State and a PhD in History from the University of Abuja.



7. What’s POP?

POP stands for Passing Out Parade. It is also called winding up..This is the last phase of activity a corper gets involved in at the end of the service year. The passing out parade starts with final clearance at both the PPA, CDS and your local government levels. A federal government issued certificate for NYSC is given during the pass out ceremony.

8. Whats GREEN CARD?8. What’s PPA?

PPA stands for Place Of Primary Assignment..Its a popular acronym used among the prospective corps members… A cprper is given a posting letter that indicates his or her Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) and the Local Government to serve in, on the last day of the orientation course 

9. Whats GREEN CARD?

The NYSC Green card is a document that consists of all a prospective corpers bio-data information which is filled during the NYSC online registration. The green card entails an individuals Name, Gender, Tel No, Home Address, Next of Kin details, information about the individuals educational background, kit specification ( jacket size, jungle boot size, etc) It is one of the essential documents all PCMs must present when they get to camp to be allowed in.

10.. What’s GUARD OF HONOR In NYSC?

The guard of honor is a guard, usually military in nature, appointed to receive/guard a head of state or other dignitaries, the fallen in war, or to attend at state ceremonials, especially funerals both in NYSC related cases.The members of the Nigerian Presidential Guard Brigade are elite Nigerian soldiers who guard the residence of the President of the Federal Republic and his or her guests as well as performing ceremonial duties.

11. What’s SAED?

The acronym SAED means Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneur Development. It is a program that is compulsory for all corps members to partake in. The program is of two division which is Skills Acquisition Division and Entrepreneurship and Empowerment Division. The function of the SAED program is to:

  1. Facilitate the training and mentoring of 100, 000 young graduates in skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development for self-reliance annually.
  2. Sensitize and mobilize 200, 000 young graduates for skill acquisition annually
  3. Promote public-private partnership for entrepreneurship development and self-reliance among Nigerian youths. Click here to read more about the program

12. What’s NYSC MOBILIZATION ?

The NYSC mobilization is aimed at ensuring that only eligible Nigerian and foreign trained graduates who pass through duly accredited full time courses are mobilized for participation in the National Youth Service.The NYSC Mobilization Department’s goal is to maintain an error-proof mobilization process capable of achieving the objectives of the Scheme which is to mobilize eligible graduates of Nigerian origin in a credible, efficient and transparent manner for national youth service..
